What if 'Enough' is Not a Number?
Apr 30, 2026
“If your answer to how much is enough is a number…you’ll likely never get there.”
Most of us have a number in mind.
A target that tells us...“Once I get there… I’ll be okay.”
Income. Savings. Net worth.
And of course there’s nothing wrong with planning, but here’s the tension:
What if enough is not a number?
The Problem With “The Number”
Here’s what I’ve seen again and again:
You hit the number…and then it changes.
$50K becomes $75K.
$75K becomes six figures.
Then it’s savings. Then net worth. Then it's something else.
The finish line just keeps moving. Because numbers are tied to a world that keeps moving and keeps changing—markets, inflation, circumstances.
You can’t control those. But you can guard your heart.
What Jesus Shows Us
In scripture, we are given the story of the widow’s offering in Mark 12:41-44. She gives almost nothing, just two small coins. Yet Jesus says she gave more than everyone else. Why?
Because it wasn’t about the amount. It was about trust, about faithfulness.
The wealthy gave from surplus. She gave from dependence.
A Different Question
When we ask, “How much is enough?” we’re usually asking more than just the base question. In our minds we add some clarifications:
- ...enough to feel secure.
- ...enough to not run out.
- ...enough to do what I want.
So maybe try a different question instead: What would it look like to be faithful with what I have right now?
Contentment Starts Today
Hebrews 13:5 says: Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”
Not later. Now.
That perspective pushes directly against the world around us.
The world says more is better. God invites us into something deeper:
Trust over accumulation.
The Hidden Cost
And I've observed that chasing a number always costs something - maybe it's your...
...time?
...peace?
...generosity?
...relationships?
We tell ourselves: “Once I get there, then I’ll focus on what matters.” But “there” keeps moving.
So What Is 'Enough'?
Maybe it’s not a number. Maybe it’s a posture:
- I’m stewarding what I have well.
- I’m living within my means.
- I’m generous.
- I trust God with what’s next.
That can happen at any income level, because 'enough' isn’t always about your account, it’s about your heart.
Try This This Week
Pause the chase and ask: “What would it look like to be faithful with what I have today?” Right now with what’s already in your hands.
Final Thought
The world says: More is more.
God shows us: Less is more—less of us, more of Him. Less striving, more trusting.
So next time you think, “I just need a little more…”
Pause and ask...
What if enough is not a number?
What if it’s a way of thinking and being?
And what if that changes everything?
