5 Expectations to Set BEFORE You Go on Vacation

vacation Jun 16, 2025

When did finding rest on your vacation get so complicated?

We work hard all year. We plan. We prepare. We count down the days until vacation. But too often, we return home more tired than when we left—frustrated, disconnected, and wondering, “Was that really worth it?”

Let’s be honest: vacations are not guaranteed spaces for rest. Without realizing it, we bring something with us that has the power to derail even the best-planned getaway.

We bring unspoken expectations.

You've likely experienced this in your own vacation. Maybe you wanted quiet while others wanted adventure. Maybe the budget wasn’t clear. Maybe everyone was trying to please everyone else, and no one actually rested. But what if we could change that?

This summer, I’m inviting you to approach your vacation with the same intentionality you bring to your work, your family, and your finances—not rigidly, but prayerfully. By clarifying just five simple expectations before you go, you can build a better vacation experience that restores you and brings you closer to the people—and God—you love most.

1. Personal Expectations

What do you want to be true for you? Sleeping in or waking early? Time alone or group fun? Some of both? Honest answers help avoid disappointment—and create space for others to be honest, too.

2. Relational Expectations

How do you want to connect with those you're traveling with? Talk with your spouse, family, or friends ahead of time. Are you together the whole time? Is it okay to split up? Clear plans bring unity—and prevent unnecessary tension.

3. Financial Expectations

Set the budget early and talk about what matters most. Plan for an splurges, honor limitations, and consider how money may impact others on the trip. When everyone’s clear, freedom replaces friction.

4. Spiritual Expectations

God doesn’t stay home when you go on vacation. He’s right there—on the beach, in the mountains, around the dinner table. Look for Him. Invite Him. Use your time away to draw closer, not drift further.

5. Physical Expectations

Do you want to rest, explore, or sweat it out with some fun activities? Either way, be honest about what you can handle—and what you need. Don’t let exhaustion steal your joy.

Imagine coming home refreshed spiritually, emotionally, relationally, closer to God, closer to your spouse, your kids, your friends. Grateful not only for time away, but energized for the return. God cares about your rest. He designed it. And when you pause with purpose, you don’t just make better memories—you make space for blessing.

So before you pack your bags, ask yourself: What do I want to be true about this vacation? Then talk about it. Pray about it. And go have your best vacation ever!
