Fear in the Boat: Finding Peace in Your Financial Storms

anxiety uncertainty Jun 16, 2025

If you've ever felt rattled in this volatile and ever-changing world—you're not alone.

We are living in a noisy world. Economic headlines scream uncertainty. Interest rates bounce like a yo-yo. Grocery bills climb. Job security feels fragile. Whether you're just starting out financially or decades in, the undercurrent of anxiety is real.

And when fear climbs into your boat and into you, it doesn’t whisper—it gets loud.

So, what do we do when the storm rolls in?

To answer that, let’s go back to a storm that shook even the seasoned pros.

Mark 4:35–41 tells the story of Jesus and His disciples on the Sea of Galilee. It was a familiar place for many of them—fishermen who had weathered many storms. But this one was different. The wind howled. Waves crashed over the sides. The boat was filling fast. Panic set in.

And Jesus? He was asleep in the back of the boat.

The disciples didn’t nudge Him gently. They didn’t ask politely. They shouted, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Let that sink in.

They weren’t wondering about the future—they felt like they were drowning right now. And that desperation brought all the raw emotion: fear, doubt, frustration, maybe even anger.

And when fear starts talking, your decisions change. The way you handle money shifts. Your confidence in relationships gets shaky. And your faith feels like it's standing in the wind, trying not to fall over.

Maybe you’ve asked the same thing in your own way:

  • “God, are you even paying attention?”
  • “Can’t you see what I’m going through?”
  • “Don’t you care that I’m drowning?”

But here's what we all know to be true: Jesus is in the boat.

He hadn’t left. He wasn’t unaware. He was right there—calm in the chaos—waiting to remind them (and us) who He is.

The storms of life, especially financial ones, reveal what we truly believe. They uncover the voices we’ve been listening to and the anchors we've been trusting.

So today, ask yourself:

  • Who’s sitting in your boat—fear or faith?
  • Are you letting the storm shape your beliefs, or are you letting your beliefs shape how you ride out the storm?

The wind may be strong. The waves may be high, but Jesus is in the boat. He’s not distant. He’s not disinterested. And He’s not done.

When your fear rises, let your faith speak louder.

Choose peace over panic. Trust over turmoil. And remember—storms don’t last forever, but God’s presence does.
